Fishing Report & 7th Annual Guatemala Billfish Invitational

It’s been non-stop since the start of the 2022 season, hence why I need to apologize for the delay in newsletters. Back to back hunting/sportfishing trade shows in Dallas, Vegas, and then the Miami Boat Show.
There is no denying that people are out in full force traveling. We all can agree that we want to get back to normalcy. Our staff has been hard at work with lots of visitors and we don’t see slowing down any time soon. Hint-Hint… this is why you should be securing your travel dates soon.
The fishing: Sails in March had better days than others. There were days of amazing numbers and others days where they were hard to find. Still with 1212 sailfish raises during the month, anglers went home with smiles on their faces. March was a great month for big dorados. So was for yellowfin tuna… just see below the Maverick crew with a 245.9lb monster!
There were 15 blue marlin raises, a little slower than normal. I’m optimistic those numbers will get better shortly. April started on the right foot and we will have those numbers for you very soon.
March Fishing Report :
March 1st – 31st: Knotwork – 268 sailfish raises, 226 bites and 154 releases. Sailfish on Fly: 35 sailfish raises, 7 bites and 3 releases. Blue Marlin: 3 raises, 2 bites, 1 release. Striped Marlin: 1 for 1. Dorados: 16. Wahoo: 1. Yellowfin tuna: 1. (21 days of fishing).
March 2nd – 31st: Chechos – 416 sailfish raises, 325 bites and 211 releases. Sailfish on Fly: 3 sailfish raises, 3 bites, 1 release. Blue Marlin: 5 raises, 2 bites, 1 release. Dorado: 19. (24 days of fishing).
March 1st – 31st: Maverick – 274 sailfish raises, 243 bites and 160 releases. Blue Marlin: 1 for 1. Dorado: 14. Yellowfin tuna: 1 (245.9lbs). (20 days of fishing).
March 1st – 31st: Gypsy – 224 sailfish raises, 163 bites and 119 releases. Blue Marlin: 5 raises, 2 bites, 2 releases. Dorado: 13. Yellowfin tuna 2. (17 days of fishing).
March 11th – 29th : Sirena – 30 sailfish raises, 24 bites and 15 releases. Sailfish on Fly: 10 raises, 4 bites, 1 release. Blue Marlin: 1 for 1. Dorado: 4. (Based on 4 days of fishing).

What an impressive catch by Larry Olsen and his grandson. This is a trip they will never forget. Congrats to the crew of Maverick. 245.9lbs!!!

IT’S BACK AND BIGGER THAN EVER! – 7TH ANNUAL GUATEMALA BILLFISH INVITATIONAL

The 2021 Guatemala Billfish Invitational was the biggest yet, we had three lodging locations at capacity. It was no surprise with such high anticipation that always builds throughout the year. So, if you think last year’s event was one for the record books… just wait till this year.
We started to receive reservations and we highly recommend for those that want to participate in this year’s event, to contact us and secure your spot. Due to limited capacity, you don’t want to be left out of this amazing fun, but competitive tournament. If you want to see part of the excitement that takes place during this time, check out the Uncharted Waters teaser video below which will air this weekend.

Heavy Traffic To Start The Year

It’s been non-stop since the start of the new year. Back to back hunting/sportfishing trade shows in Dallas and in Vegas. Now… preparing for the Miami International Boat Show. We are so excited to see and hear from so many that are looking forward to traveling in 2022. Hence why our calendar has been filling up so fast.

Congratulations to Tom Hughes (pictured above) for a great accomplishment – Billfish Grandslam. A “Grand Slam” is defined by an individual angler catching at least three of the eligible species within a category, per IGFA International Angling Rules. All catches must be made within one calendar day. In our case, it was a sailfish, striped marlin and blue marlin.

We want to give a huge CONGRATS to Zach and Jett Miller for an amazing catch. This father/son trip is one they will never forget. A huge 227.8lb yellowfin tuna on Maverick with Captain Nestor Garcia. Their arms were sore, but it was worth it. It took them an hour and forty five minute fight.

The resort staff, manager, captains, and deck hands are all top notch. I have fished all over the world and by far this is my favorite place to go. Guatemala Billfish Invitational – Best One Yet!

A HUGE congrats to everyone involved. What an event!


The 6th Annual Guatemala Billfish Invitational was not only sold out, we had three lodging locations at capacity. It was no surprise with such high anticipation that built throughout the year.


The event week started Thursday night with a Captains meeting at Pacific Fins. It was a nice time for all anglers to get acquainted and teams got to spend sometime with their boat Captains.

Saturday night was a night that all anglers were looking forward to. Celebrity Chef, Serial Griller, Matt Moore cooked up an amazing feast for all to enjoy.
Whether you were Pro or an Amateur team, The 6th Annual Guatemala Billfish Invitational was a nail biter from the start. On the Pro class, the highlight were Rumline and Chechos team. They both entered the tournament not looking for a second place trophy.

Day one; Rumline and Chechos finished the day tied with 1300 points. Rumline managed to win the daily by 11 minutes.
Day two; It was a mirror of day one, but at the end of the day, Chechos took the lead by 3 fish and managed to win the daily.
Day three; It was a thriller of a final day as claiming the top spot came down to the wire! With minutes left before lines out, team Chechos was in the lead, when second place Rumline, hooked up a double in the final moments…almost inching a comeback to overtake the top spot. What a way to end the 6th annual of competition for team Chechos! 

Tournament Results

1st Place Pro Team for a total of 4100 points, team Chechos.
Anglers: Ozzy Delgado, Juan Manuel Cobar, Josh Greene, and Peter Miller. Captain Carlos Diaz. Team won day 2 calcutta and overall prize money.
2nd Place Pro Team for a total of 4000 points, team Rumline.
Anglers: Dell Dembosky, Mary Dembosky, Ken Cofer, Amanda Cofer. Captain Terry Brennan. Team won day 1 calcutta. Congrats to Captain Terry and his crew for putting up a great fight to the end.
3rd Place Pro Team for a total of 3700 points, team Makina.
Anglers: Ed Secke, Mark Anstine, Austin Collins, and Carey Riel. Captain Luis Wicho Ramirez. Team won day 3 calcutta.
1st Place Amateur Team for a total of 3100 points, team Piragua.
Anglers: Hugo Mayorga, Alexander Alonso, Nelson Duarte, Jaret Williams.
1st Place Marlin with 2 blue marlin releases, team Captain Hook.
Anglers: Kris Mohandie, Fran Gough, Kyle Sowell, Fran Gough, and Matt Moore.
1st Place Dorado for a total of 127.4 pounds, team Uno Mas.
Anglers: George Plihal, Albert Guzman, Mike Russell, and George Gozdz. Captain Justin Royal.
Another amazing highlight during the Invitational, to have Rivers Rutherford’s presence at Pacific Fins. With a name like Rivers Rutherford, it’s no surprise this soulful storyteller and recent Nashville Songwriter’s Hall of Famer was destined to become one of music’s most talented and accomplished singer-songwriters.
Guests at the Invitational had front row seats as David Lee Murphy performed several songs. David is an American country music singer and songwriter. He is best known for his #1 country hits “Dust on the Bottle” and “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright”, as well as the hit songs “Party Crowd”, “Out with a Bang”, “Every Time I Get Around You”, “The Road You Leave Behind”, and “Loco”. Oh and by the way… Congrats to David for releasing his first blue marlin!

The tournament in 3 days, generated a total of 545 sailfish raises, 480 bites and 348 Sailfish releases. 8 blue marlin and 2 striped marlin.
We want to THANK all our participating anglers for making this a special one yet. We were happy to see all having a great time, meeting and making new friends. From the kick-off party and Poolside Celebration to the neighboring resorts (Casa Vieja Lodge, The Hook, Sailfish Oasis, and Aeroclub) who took part in the Invitational, to the awards presentation at the final dinner and all the parties and fishing in between, this is definitely a tournament that any novice or serious angler needs to be a part of. We are pleased to support the Billfish Conservation Project and the week-long festivities that generate much needed funds for a worthy cause – A total of $18,000 was collected.
In addition, we are going to be posting on our social pages pictures that were taken during the event. 2022 dates will be: December 8th through the 12th. Trust me… YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS IT!

A Special Award For A Special Person

A lot happens behind the scenes that people don’t see or hear. Much hard work and preparation goes into these events. It can be stressful at times, but in the end, the results are all worth it.

Unfathomed Host Trip – Exceeding all expectations!

Another sold out Unfathomed hosted trip becomes one for the books!
“Our trip to Pacific Fins on the hosted Unfathomed trip with George Gozdz and Ozzy Delgado was an experience that far exceeded all expectations” – Adam Kurtin.

It’s been six long months since the last Unfathomed trip. I can tell you during those months, there was a lot anticipation for this one.

This trip was a little different from the last one. Instead of just making a stop in the town of Antigua, it was a straight shot to Pacific Fins for three days of rod bending action.
Blue marlin, striped marlin, sailfish, dorado, yellowfin tuna, and grouper were the main attraction during the three days. Got to see the excitement on everyone’s faces once they returned to Pacific Fins from a day out on the water. Lot’s of guests got thrown into the sailfish pool for earning their stripes by releasing their first billfish.

After three amazing days at Pacific Fins, it was time to move to the next step adventure in our itinerary, Casa Santo Domingo. Breakfast at PF and a short drive to the ancient city. Since, we were early to check in at the hotel, we all left our bags and hit the town. A quick stop at the Casa del Ron (House of Rum) is a must when visiting Antigua.

We all had the opportunity to taste Guatemala’s rum of choice, Zacapa Rum. After our power lunch at the Rum House, we ventured into the streets of Antigua so that everyone can witness first hand old ruins, hotels, restaurants, stores, and a collection of ancient Mayan sculptures and other artifacts.

If you are a fan of an old fashioned drink, Casa del Ron (House of Rum) has a smoked cocktail that will blow your taste buds.

George’s father was not the only one to make history, a lot of guests made their own history by releasing their first bucket list fish too.

October Fishing Frenzy

The start of our season has been nothing short of spectacular. Groups have been raising double digit numbers of sails, enough dorado for lunch and dinner, and yellowfin tuna from 60lbs to an impressive 176lb beast. Plus, we are not surprised the main attraction has been the blue marlin presence.

When a guest calls us, one of their question is… “when is the best time to fish Guatemala?”. You can ask many and get different answers. It’s hard to answer because Guatemala’s fishery is phenomenal year round.
I’ve always been a firm believer that October is the month to be in Guatemala. It kicks off the season with lots of action and variety.

I am excited to announce that the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation is sponsoring a series of Blue Water Fishing Expeditions at the world famous Pacific Fins Resort in Guatemala. I will be there along with one of our marine research scientists.

Each expedition is limited to 18 anglers and will encompass three days of fishing in Eastern Tropical Pacific waters. Every angler will fish with me on my boat at least one day.
As you may know, Pacific Fins Resort has access to some of the world’s most prolific offshore and inshore fishing, which is why it’s one of my favorite fishing holes in the world! We will be fishing for blue marlin, dorados, roosterfish, yellowfin tuna, cubera snapper and other species running during your visit.

After a great day of fishing we’ll all be dining together as well as having two private cocktail parties. I will be painting an original to be auctioned off on our last night together.

Attention Cigar Aficionados!

On our last newsletter, we started to announce all of the special guests and sponsors that will take part in this year’s event. First, we announced Serial Griller, Matt Moore. In 1947, the Rodriguez family began the masterful art of cultivating tobacco on their private plantation in the town of Siguaney. The tobacco plantation was called, La Finca De Carmencita. Located in the villas province of Cuba. La Finca De Carmencita specialized in growing, aging, and curing filler tobacco leaves for numerous manufacturers throughout Cuba.
By 1952, La Finca De Carmencita employed over 20 workers and grew over 120,000 pounds of tobacco annually.
Eight years later, the Cuban government nationalized the private plantation and the Rodriguez family was forced to immigrate to the Unites States.
In 1971, the Rodriguez family found a new beginning on the beautiful island of Key West and established the Rodriguez Cigar Factory.

Pacific Fins Welcomes Serial Griller: Matt Moore

Let the countdown begin! In the coming weeks/months leading up to the 6th Annual Guatemala Billfish Invitational, we will be announcing special guests and sponsors that will take part in this years event.
The Billfish Invitational is excited to welcome Serial Griller, Matt Moore.
Author. Entrepreneur. Cook. Musician. Host. Pilot. Adventurer. Southern Gentleman. 
These are just some of the words used to describe Nashville, TN based Matt Moore. Moore’s work has garnered critical acclaim as far reaching as the BBC and CBC to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Atlanta Constitution, Chicago Tribune, People, Southern Living, Redbook, Esquire, Men’s Journal, TODAY, CBS, VH1, FOX, Hallmark, The Art of Manliness, and countless others. As a chef, Moore specializes in updated Southern cuisine with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences. He’s also a cast-iron and wild game enthusiast with extensive experience working over live fires.

He has negotiated distribution and license agreement in over 30 countries, including big-box stores such as Belk, Dillards, and Bloomingdales – securing license products for Fortune 500 brands, as well as luxury European brands.

For those that love to grill, which I think the majority of us do, Matt will be handing out to all participating anglers a copy of his book, Serial Griller.

Who say’s fishing is not great in the offseason?

Sailfish, marlin, dorado and yellowfin tuna are the most common offshore species in Guatemala. But make no mistake, this is the best sailfishing spot in the world! On average you can experience 15 to 20+ bites a day. And during the peak season, from October through May, 40 or more bites a day is not uncommon.
So, what about June and July? June is the start of what we call the offseason. That is the transitional period from dry to wet season. But is it really a wet one as some say? I say it’s just like Summer here in the states. Pockets of rain and sunshine. Plus, a great advantage of fishing during June and July that is less crowded and… you can save money with our summer specials – hint, hint.
For several years now, we have been seeing some incredible fishing during these months. Is it a fluke? Let the numbers below be the judge of that.

  • June 6th: Chechos – 11 sailfish raises, 10 bites and 7 releases. 8 dorado and 1 marlin raise.
  • June 8th: Maverick – 10 rooster raises raises, 7 bites and 5 releases.1 red snapper and 5 mackerel.
