Guatemala Billfish Invitational: A must attend event!

The Billfish Invitational is Back! And with such high anticipation of many anglers, it’s shaping up to be the best one yet. Pacific Fins Ambassadors joining us are; Uncharted Waters – Peter Miller, Unfathomed – George Gozdz, and Into the Blue’s – Scott Walker. We will also name several celebs that will be joining us as in the coming weeks.
The 6th Annual Guatemala Billfish Invitational will take place December 9th – 13th, 2021, at our beautiful Pacific Fins Resort. Well-known anglers from across the globe will compete in this exciting three-day fishing event while raising money to support the Billfish Conservation Project.

This tournament provides a fun twist for participating teams. A daily Calcutta will be on the table for those that want to make things interesting. Teams will have the chance to win daily prizes and battle it out for the ultimate prize (Kingsailfish Mount Trophy). It’s also a unique opportunity to fish the most prolific billfish destination on the planet during prime time, while you network with fellow anglers, celebrity guests, and potentially earn bragging rights for the next 12 months!

The tournament will kick off on December 9th at the resort with the professional chefs creating a full-on feast for the check-in and opening party. Fishing dates are December 10th, 11th and 12th, with an award’s ceremony taking place the night of the 12th. Guests will depart on December 13th.

The tournament package includes three days of fishing, four nights of lodging, double occupancy, daily laundry service, a la carte meals, beverages, transportation to and form the airport and three days of fishing.
When fishing with Pacific Fins you can expect all of the tackle and gear to be top-notch and the crews to be on their game. Each day of fishing also includes snacks, fruit, lunch and beverages.

May Recipe: Sailfish, Blue Marlin, Dorado, Tuna, Roosterfish, & Cubera

The month of May produced some great fishing. One of the many highlights was to witness our friend and Pacific Fins Ambassador, Captain George Gozdz releasing his first blue marlin – after 48 years. How about Maverick having a banner day; 65 sailfish raises, 55 bites, 32 releases and 4 dorados! How about Gypsy with an inshore day; 32 Rooster fish raises, 23 bites and 12 releases.
Marlin activity started to become a norm and it will continue through the summer months. The supporting cast: dorado and yellowfin tuna have been plentiful. Don’t expect for yellowfin tuna and BIG dorado to disappear anytime soon. They will be here waiting for you! This folks is why people travel to Guatemala.
With Summer around the corner and the subject of COVID becoming smaller in the rear view mirror, many started to plan their family vacation.

It’s always a pleasure to have Peter Miller at Pacific Fins. We want to THANK him for returning to one of his favorite places and film a show.
This time Peter was accompanied with his girlfriend, Alessia Andrade. They got to experience great fishing and one of the highlights was having Alessia catch her first Pacific Sailfish. I’m not going to ruin the surprise, you’ll have to tune in to Discovery Channel this weekend and see for yourself all the action.

The inaugural Unfathomed hosted trip with George Gozdz was a homerun!

I can say, everyone echoed what Tommy said. The first Unfathomed hosted trip with George Gozdz was a homerun in many ways.
First on the agenda after we landed in Guatemala, a quick tour of Antigua. A stop at the Casa de Ron (House of Rum) is a must when visiting the town. We all had the opportunity to taste Guatemala’s rum of choice, Zacapa Rum. After our power lunch at the Rum House, we ventured into the streets of Antigua so that everyone can witness first hand old ruins, hotels, restaurants, stores, and a collection of ancient Mayan sculptures and other artifacts.
After our Antigua fix, on our drive to Pacific Fins, we would see more diversity in the landscape. Vivid colors, lush vegetation, volcanoes rising into the sky, and a mix of Mayan and colonial influences in the architecture that gave everyone the sense of the cultural and ecological richness of Guatemala. Once we arrived at Pacific Fins, it was all about making memories.

Built in the 17th century, Santa Catalina Arch is one of the distinguishable landmarks in Antigua Guatemala.

A must…. a stop at Casa del Ron (House of Rum) in Antigua. Nothing gets you started than with an old fashioned drink with Zacapa Rum.

We want congratulate George Gozdz for a job well done, and by organizing a remarkable trip with amazing people. For him to finally release his first blue marlin. George was not the only one to make history, a lot of guests made their own history by releasing their first bucket list fish too. A trip all won’t forget.

A Trip to Remember

A highly anticipated trip, which began planning in March 2019, five Cuban-Americans set a fishing trip for August 2019. Unfortunately, that trip was postponed last minute due to a hurricane heading towards Miami and then again in April 2020 due to Covid travel restrictions.

Talk about bad luck… but as they say… third time is the charm and it was worth the wait!
We have to THANK Ralph, Harry, Robert, Joel, and Mandy for doing a very nice thing for Pacific Fins. They got together and created a website about their trip to Guatemala. Check out their website which highlights all of their experience from day one – plus… they have some great videos.

The Catching Continues…

The term… fishing not catching, does not pertain to Guatemala. Catching is the norm here and this past April was a good one. Yes, there were days better than others, but overall we saw lots of fish.
A lot of our guests opted to catch their share of meat fish (dorado and yellowfin tuna) after they caught plenty of sails on their first day of fishing. Other guests also stayed close to shore to go after an exotic fish they never caught, rooster fish.
As we get closer to Summer, dorado and yellowfin tuna will still be very popular and you’ll start to see more blue marlin in the spread.
Thinking of something special for Dad this Father’s Day? how about a trip to Guatemala? he will be very happy you did!

The sails are Back!

No more roller coaster rides! For a couple of weeks, the fishing was like visiting an amusement park – up and down, up and down. I’m happy to say, our fishery has gained back the status of “Sailfish Capital of the World”.
For a while there, we were scratching our heads on what was going on. On the positive side, when the sailfishing was not up to par, a mixed bag of yellowfin tuna and BIG dorado made up for slow time. What better way to release a few sails and still catch sushi grade tuna and dorado.
Overall, the numbers on our fishing report illustrates how April started. Dorado and yellowfin tuna are still there and we expect it to last through the summer.

From Tuna To Dorado

If you love dorado aka mahi-mahi, they are here in full force! Guests are enjoying these great fighting fish throughout the day. And let’s not talk about how tasty they are. A lot of their sizes have been over 30lbs.
As we venture offshore, there is still yellowfin tuna around with the spinner dolphin. Our last newsletter mentioned we were seeing a lot of tuna. I guess now the mixed bag just got better.
Per our fishing report below, it’s been a roller coaster ride out there. Not due to waves, but how the sailfish bite has been lately. There are better days than others, hence why it felt like a roller coaster. Surely not the action we are used to during this time of year. The whole Guatemala fleet feels the same way.
Overall, it’s been really busy for us and everyone is returning back home with great memories and stories to tell. We look forward to welcoming more guests and we are optimistic the sailfish bite will improve very soon.

“Spring has Sprung”

I know Spring isn’t till March 20th, but Spring has Sprung! We are very happy to see that the fishing woke up and guests are enjoying themselves.
If you recall in the last newsletter, due to a mix of strong cold fronts and green water making it’s way into the fishing grounds, the fishing slowed down in February.
Those cold fronts that hit hard in Texas and other parts of the US made their way down. Plus, we recently got a synopsis from one of the best in the biz, Marine Biologist, Dr. Nelson Ehrhardt. “The catch rates have been slow in February because of the extended billfish habitat in the Tehuantepec-El Salvador region. We know the cause of this huge anomaly. Significant and unusual shifts of the winds; therefore not allowing development of strong upwelling in the Tehuanteoec basin.” – Dr. Ehrhardt.
The good news, blue water made its way into the grounds which resulted in better action. Hence the higher numbers in this weeks fishing report.

“The Smorgasbord Season”

You can’t say “Spring Break” without thinking of a fishing trip. We are aware you are tired of the cold and miserable Winter. So, now it’s time to start planning a fishing trip to Pacific Fins, where you will get thawed out.
Our peak season is October through May, but… now comes the time of year many love. I call it “The Smorgasbord Season”. This is when not only you get intense sailfish action, its when blue marlin start to be more abundant. Yellowfin tuna will be active around spinner dolphin, and dorado will be in the larger class. Plus, you can’t never rule out a striped marlin in the spread and wahoo.
March through May is a great time to be here. It’s also the time that books fast. We have limited space available, want to be part of an epic season? Grab your passports, call your fishing partners, pack your bags, and head to Guatemala!

Uncharacteristic for this region, due to a mix of strong cold fronts and green water making it’s way into the fishing grounds, it has been a slow February. As you can see the fishing reports, there has been better days than others.
The good news, blue water started to make its way into the grounds which has resulted in better action. The blue marlin bite has picked up and reports of yellowfin tuna has sushi lovers very happy!
