Guatemala First country to legislate the protection of the sailfish

As of 1997, the Guatemalan Congress approved the current fishing laws that contemplated the protection of the sailfish (Istiophorus Platypterus), stating: It strictly prohibits commercial fishing, capture, processing, exporting of the sailfish, except for sporting practices.

For his leadership role creating and working for the Guatemalan Sailfish Commission and his vision to expand it within the region, Niels receives from IGFA President Rob Kramer the coveted Conservation Award.

Guatemalan National Commission for the Protection of the Sailfish

In 2014, our government’s cabinet signed the gubermental decree creating the Sailfish Commission. It incorporates within a Task Force, representatives from the ministries directly related to the enforcement of the fishing laws with the private charter boat and sportfishing federation to work towards a SUSTAINABLE TOURISM INDUSTRY for our country. This milestone decree has become the framework for billfish regulation within Central America.

Sailfish Commission Satellite Tagging Initiative

For the 3rd Annual Billfish Invitational, the organizing committe partnered with Dr. Nelson Ehrhard and the University of MIami’s Rosenthiel School of Marine Sciences to place 10 Satellite Tags donated by anglers, corporations and celebrities. This initiative will provide much needed data on the life of the sailfish.

As of 2019, the donations that go for satellite tags will be tax deductible and be placed on sailfish within the timeframe of this year’s 4th Billfish Invitational.

Guatemala Billfish Invitational - A Pro-Am Tourney supporting the Sailfish Commission

For three years now, Pacific Fins has been the lead organizer of the Billfish Invitational. With support from celebrities from the fishing industry, actors, sports heroes and business tycoons, paying anglers can fish and mingle with all of them while providing the much needed donations that sustain the Guatemalan Sailfish Commission.
