Dec 2014 – Guatemala Fishing Report

Father/Son team of Eric & Brett Knellinger returned for 2nd year in a row over Christmas. Also joining them this year are Heidi Roschke and Billy Bennet. Fishing 4 days on Maverick they raised 38 sailfish, had 36 bites and released 31.

Father/Son team of Kris and Kash arrived for 3 days fishing on Gypsy. They raised 20 sailfish, had 16 bites and released 11. December 2014

Father/Son team of Kris and Kash arrived for 3 days fishing on Gypsy.  They raised 20 sailfish, had 16 bites and released 11.  They also raised another 2 sailfish on fly, with 2 bites and 1 release on fly.  2 dorado were also nailed on fly as well.

Fly fisher Jerry Katz arrived for the 3rd year in a row.  Fishing on Aguardiente for 3 days he raised 36 sailfish, had 17 bites and released 8 on FLY!  And the marlin……On the first day Jerry raised 2 marlin on fly and did not get them.  Over the next 2 days he raised 8 marlin, had 4 bites and released 3 Blues (conventional)!!  He also caught 3 yellowfin on fly.

Niels Erichsen and family fishing on Sirena for 1 day raised 30 sailfish, had 27 bites and released 19.

A group of our staff fished on Maverick and raised 23 sailfish, had 21 bites and released 11.  It was great to get them out on the water for all their hard work.  They also caught 9 yellowfin tuna.

Another group of local clients entertained some clients on Aguardiente for 1 day of fishing and they raised 10 sailfish, had 10 bites and released 6.

A group of our local clients, the Gonzalez family raised 4 sailfish on Maverick, had 3 bites and released 2.  They also caught 1 Blue marlin!

Olle Karlsson visited from Sweden.  Fishing 3 days on Aguardiente he raised 16 sailfish, had 13 bites and released 10.  He also caught 7 dorado and 2 yellowfin tuna.

Johnny & Stacey Powers visited us for 8th time.  Fishing on Maverick for parts of 3 days they raised 15 sailfish, had 14 bites and released 10.  They also raised 3 Blue marlin, had 1 bite and released 1 along with 10+ dorado.

Dan Erb and his group visits Pacific Fins every year – sometimes 2x per year.  Fishing on Gypsy for 3 days they raised 38 sailfish, had 27 bites and released 20.   They also raised 2 Blue marlin with 2 bites and released 1!

Eddie Umana & Pat Clark visited us to check out Pacific Fins for entertaining some of their corporate clients in the future.  Fishing on Aguardiente they raised 10 sailfish, had 8 bites and released 6 in 1 day fishing.  They also caught 14 dorado!

Halfway through The International Light Tackle Tournament (ILTTA) in Guatemala and 4 of Pacific Fins boats in Top 7. Woohoo!

Later this week we will update the rest of November on the fishing reports, but wanted to report the following!

After Day 1 of The ILTTA tourney in Guatemala our boat Maverick is in 2nd place and our boat Gypsy is in 3rd place!

Anglers from across the globe arrive today to compete in The 74th International Light Tackle Tournament (ILTTA) here in Guatemala Dec 1 – 7, 2014. Good luck to all those fishing the tournament and we look forward to a great event!

Capt Jim Toabe returned for the 12th time. This trip was to celebrate his 90th Birthday at Pacific Fins with his family. He was joined by Bob Toabe, Sam Toabe, John Cole, Tom Gill and Kevin Kernan.  Fishing on Gypsy and Danmark for 3 days his group raised 129 sailfish, had 115 bites and released 94!

Mike Love, Michael Love, Jr, Conrad Love and Lynn Narramore  arrived for 3 days fishing. On Sirena where they raised 94 sailfish, had 81 bites and released 69!

Steve Collis and his group of fly fishers returned for the 4th time and SLAMMED them on FLY. Also, joining Steve were Alastair Jones, Nick and Tim Lee.  Fishing on Gypsy and Canaso 2 for 5 days they raised 187 sailfish, had 108 bites and released 50 ON FLY!

Nigel Sowerby arrived for the 2nd time with his wife Helen.  Fishing 5 days on Maverick he  raised 106 sails, had 80 bites and released 56.

Scott, Graham and Will arrived for 3rd time. Fishing on Maverick for 2 days they raised 8 sailfish, had 7 bites and released 5.  They also caught plenty of dorado and had a triple yellowfin tuna release.

Guatemala Fishery Breaks Record and Delivers Again!!!

The Presidential Challenge of Guatemala (Nov 7,8,9) breaks records.  845 SAILFISH AND 4 BLUE MARLIN RELEASED BY 12 BOATS IN 3 DAYS! Average of 24 sailfish released per boat/per day.

Congrats to Tournament winner Team Picaflor with 10,400, Tournament Coordinator Joan Vernon and all who made the tournament a raging success.

Local boats training for the ILTTA in December over the weekend also averaged similar numbers.

Fall 2014

John Davis and Roy Van Wyk returned for the 4th time in 2 years to kick off our winter season. Also joining them were Al Penson and Jim Bledsoe. Fishing 2 days on Knotwork they raised 17 sailfish, had 13 bites and released 10. They also caught 8 dorado. But the big deal was raising 4 marlin, with 3 bites and releasing 2 BLUES!

Grandfather/Grandson Team of Tony Wilson and George Kalkounis arrived for 3 days fishing with us. They raised 45 sailfish, had 41 bites and released 30. They had several doubles and a triple. George released 2 of the sails on that triple! They also raised 1 marlin and caught a boatload of dorado.

Roy Stace and Paul Bowling arrived from The United Kingdom. In 4 days fishing they raised 18 sailfish, had 16 bites and released 14. They also caught 1 250 lb Blue marlin, yellowfin tuna and dorado. They gave us this compliment: “Best mates we have fished with anywhere in the world at Pacific Fins.”

April 10 – 19

Alexey Bozuk, Konstatin Grishin, Andrey Motaylenko, Alexsandr Guliaev, Andrey Kalayda and Sergei Vitkin arrived from Russia for 5 days fishing.  On Gypsy, Maverick and Canaso 2 they raised 271 sailfish, had 191 bites, released 110 conventional and 8 on fly!  They also caught 18 yellowfin tuna and 7 dorado.

Jim Bishop arrived for his 2nd trip in 5 months!  Joining him were Mike Molina and Aubrey Robertson.  Fishing on Sirena for 2 days they raised 65 sailfish, had 56 bites and released 47.

Dylan & Garrett Schopper arrived for 3 days fishing on Maverick.  They raised 71 sailfish, had 64 bites and released 48.  3 of those 48 were 10 lb juveniles which was very interesting.  They also caught 1 Striped marlin, 2 dorado, and 1 yellowfin.  Total mixed bag.

The Diego Pulido group fished with us one day on Sirena.  They raised 7 sailfish, had 6 bites and released 6.

Keith Hopkins returned for the 2nd time.  Joining him were Bill Geary, Jeff Jones, Kevin Morgan, Marcus Sullivan and John Wiley.  Fishing 2 boats on Day 1 and a big boat on Day 2 they raised 73 sailfish, had 65 bites and released 39.

The guys from Alliance One fished 1 day and hit them big time.  Fishing on Sirena they raised 60 sailfish, had 52 bites and released 46!

MARCH 6 – 9

Fishing is RED Hot!
Bill Buckley II and Bill Buckley III arrived for the 3rd year in a row.  Fishing 3 days on Maverick they raised 87 sailfish, had 83 bites and released 59.

Niels Erichsen and son Ian fished Club Nautico’s V-VI tournament on March 7 and 8 on Danmark.  They raised 79 sailfish, had 70 bites and released 41.  All in all 19 boats in the Tournament, 57 anglers averaged 25 bites per boat on Day 1 averaging 25 bites per boat and 40 bites on Day 2 with several above the 50 bite mark!

Michael Roche & Jeff Brown arrived for 1 day fishing on Canaso II.  They raised 45 sailfish, had 25 bites and released 10 conventional and 1 on fly.

James Zlomke arrived for 3 days fishing on Gypsy.  After Day 1 and Day 2 he raised 54 sailfish, had 27 bites, released 12 conventional and 2 on fly.

MARCH 24 – 31

Larry Gury, Ralph Schulz and Mark Koller arrived for the 2nd year in a row.  Fishing on Sirena for 3 days they raised 44 sailfish, had 38 bites and released 31.

Tom, Ed and Marion Francis arrived for 3 days fishing.  Marion wanted to celebrate his 70th birthday catching sails and his two sons treated him to a great adventure.  Fishing on Maverick they raised 33 sailfish, had 22 bites, released 4 sails conventional and 9 on fly!  They also caught 6 yellowfin tuna and 2 dorado.

One of our local congressman fished with us March 29th on Danmark and caught a 350 lb Blue marlin and 10 yellowfin tuna!

A group of local clients fishing on Maverick March 26 raised 11 sailfish, had 11 bites and released 8.

Johnny and Stacey Powers visited again to fish with us.  On Gypsy in 3 days fishing they raised 23 sailfish, had 21 bites, released 15 sailfish, 12 yellowfin tuna and 2 dorado.

 A group of local clients fished Aguardiente on March 28th for a 1/2 day and raised 4 sailfish, had 4 bites and released 2.

 The Perry Dye Family fished on Gypsy March 28 and caught 14 yellowfin tuna.

 A couple from Russia visiting Guatemala stopped by the Resort and we had an opening on March 27th on Gypsy between groups.  They raised 4 sailfish, had 3 bites, released 2 sailfish and 2 dorado.

April 1 – 7

Chris Jones, Edwin Harris, Gregg Plunkett and Donald Bogden arrived.  Fishing 3 days on Gypsy they raised 56 sailfish, had 47 bites, released 31 conventional and 2 on fly.

Bill O’Connor, Bill Lambert and Howard Pitts arrived for 3 days of fly fishing on Canaso II.  They raised 55 sailfish, had 28 bites and released 13 on Fly.  They also caught 3 dorado and 4 yellow fin.

The guys from Universal Leaf fished on April 2 and April 5. They fished 1 day on Allure and 1 day on Sirena. They raised 30 sailfish, had 24 bites and released 20.  They also caught 2 dorado.

 Gary Converse, Craig Little, Doug Fenwick and Tim Biewer arrived for 3 days fishing.  Fishing on Gypsy & Maverick they raised 86 sailfish, had 57 bites and released 41.

Bill Tate arrived for 2 days fishing.  On Maverick he raised 34 sailfish, had 28 bites and released 18.
