October Fishing Frenzy

The start of our season has been nothing short of spectacular. Groups have been raising double digit numbers of sails, enough dorado for lunch and dinner, and yellowfin tuna from 60lbs to an impressive 176lb beast. Plus, we are not surprised the main attraction has been the blue marlin presence.

When a guest calls us, one of their question is… “when is the best time to fish Guatemala?”. You can ask many and get different answers. It’s hard to answer because Guatemala’s fishery is phenomenal year round.
I’ve always been a firm believer that October is the month to be in Guatemala. It kicks off the season with lots of action and variety.

Go Billfishing with Guy Harvey

Meet Dr. Guy Harvey:

Guy Harvey is the man behind the Guy Harvey world. A man that doesn’t need introduction, known all over the world for his amazing conservation work. Guy is a unique blend of artist, scientist, diver, angler, conservationist and explorer, fiercely devoted to his family and his love of the sea.

“Dear Fellow Anglers:
I am excited to announce that the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation is sponsoring a series of Blue Water Fishing Expeditions at the world famous Pacific Fins Resort in Guatemala. I will be there along with one of our marine research scientists.

Each expedition is limited to 18 anglers and will encompass three days of fishing in Eastern Tropical Pacific waters. Every angler will fish with me on my boat at least one day.
As you may know, Pacific Fins Resort has access to some of the world’s most prolific offshore and inshore fishing, which is why it’s one of my favorite fishing holes in the world! We will be fishing for blue marlin, dorados, roosterfish, yellowfin tuna, cubera snapper and other species running during your visit.

After a great day of fishing we’ll all be dining together as well as having two private cocktail parties. I will be painting an original to be auctioned off on our last night together.

May Recipe: Sailfish, Blue Marlin, Dorado, Tuna, Roosterfish, & Cubera

The month of May produced some great fishing. One of the many highlights was to witness our friend and Pacific Fins Ambassador, Captain George Gozdz releasing his first blue marlin – after 48 years. How about Maverick having a banner day; 65 sailfish raises, 55 bites, 32 releases and 4 dorados! How about Gypsy with an inshore day; 32 Rooster fish raises, 23 bites and 12 releases.
Marlin activity started to become a norm and it will continue through the summer months. The supporting cast: dorado and yellowfin tuna have been plentiful. Don’t expect for yellowfin tuna and BIG dorado to disappear anytime soon. They will be here waiting for you! This folks is why people travel to Guatemala.
With Summer around the corner and the subject of COVID becoming smaller in the rear view mirror, many started to plan their family vacation.
So, whether is for summer or the upcoming season, we highly suggest you book soon. More and more people have started to reserve into the months ahead and you don’t want to miss out on an experience of a lifetime. Live the Pacific Fins Experience!

Visit from Peter Miller

It’s always a pleasure to have Peter Miller at Pacific Fins. We want to THANK him for returning to one of his favorite places and film a show.
This time Peter was accompanied with his girlfriend, Alessia Andrade. They got to experience great fishing and one of the highlights was having Alessia catch her first Pacific Sailfish. I’m not going to ruin the surprise, you’ll have to tune in to Discovery Channel this weekend and see for yourself all the action.

A Trip to Remember

A highly anticipated trip, which began planning in March 2019, five Cuban-Americans set a fishing trip for August 2019. Unfortunately, that trip was postponed last minute due to a hurricane heading towards Miami and then again in April 2020 due to Covid travel restrictions.

Talk about bad luck… but as they say… third time is the charm and it was worth the wait!
We have to THANK Ralph, Harry, Robert, Joel, and Mandy for doing a very nice thing for Pacific Fins. They got together and created a website about their trip to Guatemala. Check out their website which highlights all of their experience from day one – plus… they have some great videos.

The sails are Back!

No more roller coaster rides! For a couple of weeks, the fishing was like visiting an amusement park – up and down, up and down. I’m happy to say, our fishery has gained back the status of “Sailfish Capital of the World”.
For a while there, we were scratching our heads on what was going on. On the positive side, when the sailfishing was not up to par, a mixed bag of yellowfin tuna and BIG dorado made up for slow time. What better way to release a few sails and still catch sushi grade tuna and dorado.
Overall, the numbers on our fishing report illustrates how April started. Dorado and yellowfin tuna are still there and we expect it to last through the summer.
If you are planning a trip in the near future, I highly suggest to book soon. More and more people have started to look into the months ahead and you don’t want to miss out on an adventure of a lifetime. Live the Pacific Fins Experience!

“The Smorgasbord Season”

You can’t say “Spring Break” without thinking of a fishing trip. We are aware you are tired of the cold and miserable Winter. So, now it’s time to start planning a fishing trip to Pacific Fins, where you will get thawed out.
Our peak season is October through May, but… now comes the time of year many love. I call it “The Smorgasbord Season”. This is when not only you get intense sailfish action, its when blue marlin start to be more abundant. Yellowfin tuna will be active around spinner dolphin, and dorado will be in the larger class. Plus, you can’t never rule out a striped marlin in the spread and wahoo.
March through May is a great time to be here. It’s also the time that books fast. We have limited space available, want to be part of an epic season? Grab your passports, call your fishing partners, pack your bags, and head to Guatemala!

Fishing Report

Uncharacteristic for this region, due to a mix of strong cold fronts and green water making it’s way into the fishing grounds, it has been a slow February. As you can see the fishing reports, there has been better days than others.
The good news, blue water started to make its way into the grounds which has resulted in better action. The blue marlin bite has picked up and reports of yellowfin tuna has sushi lovers very happy!

February 6th: Chechos (Captain Nestor) – 4 sailfish raises, 3 bites and 2 releases. 1 for 2 on blue marlin and 2 dorados.
February 9th: Knotwork (Captain Caluco) – 3 sailfish raises, 3 bites and 3 releases. 1 yelowfin tuna.
February 12th: Gypsy (Captain Jorge) – 11 sailfish raises, 11 bites and 10 releases. 1 dorado.
